Deviation Special #1 @ Fabric: Photos Part 1
May 20th, 2009 by Deviation
Last night we kicked off the first Deviation Special @ Fabric; and what a night!
Benji B set things off from 9 to 11pm with some Deviation classics and had the room jumping before J Rocc came on and absolutely destroyed it for 2 hours with a mix up of disco, house, hip hop and Beat Junkie dubplates. We were treated to a surprise performance of Jaylib’s “The Red” by Madlib which tore the house down and then a 1 hour DJ set from the man himself previewing 100% new Madlib material including the new Madvillain project. J Rocc went back on for another half hour playing some hip hop classics and then Benji B and J Rocc went back to back, one for one on 4 decks to finish the night off.
The soundsystem in Fabric’s Room One was sick - the bass system in the floorboards had the sell out 800 strong crowd jumping all night and a packed dancefloor until 3am on a Tuesday night.
Big up to everyone that came through, and apologies to everyone that couldn’t get in. If you were there leave us a comment with your thoughts on the night, as well as your favourite tunes.
More photos to come - plus video and audio soon.
Regular Deviation Session continues first Wednesday of every month at Gramaphone, and watch out for more Deviation Specials in the future.

deviation at fabric was off the hook man couldn’t of looked forward to anything better …. last week falling through sucked out but the hype up 4 the 19th was intense j rocc smashed it all night on and off and madlib was even better than expected . Benji B was dropping some funky shit to. The sets were banging. old shit new shit, reggae, ruff drafts new madvillain tracks. constant cuts n breaks all night long. couldn’t have had a better time. percee p n guilty next?
That system was melting my face off with those new Madlib cuts and that little classics set J-Rocc pulled at the end was sick…MASS APPEAL!!
favrite tunes? was it the healer? or the light? or fall in love? raise it up? or U gotta have freedom right at the end….2 many…
For me, the last 20 mins was the best - J Roc and Benji. Hearing James Mason on that system was nice.
I loved J.Rocc and Benji but Madlib came across arrogant. He seemed completely stoned and out of it. The one moment where the manager had to get him back on stage was ridiculous, letting people scream and beg for every other track. It didn’t seem really back to back to me, but rather J.Rocc trying to save Madlib from doing whatever. I have been to lots of deviation nights and they were all great, but the young and hungry producers who normally play there, seem to have less of an attitude and just come down to rock.
Seems like a hell of a gig. Nice crowd too. Gotto get there once!
Thomas - my thoughts exactly. Can’t put it better.
I am a big fan of Madlib. I’m really in awe of his musical genius and output; but I think it was just disrespectful for him to be on stage in that state. Flashes of brilliance though.
J. Rocc’s cut up of ‘Mass Appeal’ was worth the price of admission alone. Ahhh…. he makes it look so easy!
Thanks for a great Deviation special (Tuesday night… ah you’re making me pay!) Looking forward to the next one!
Bigup to Benji B & the deviation posse! I enjoyed the night! nice to see so many peoples made it out. N btw I think Madlib is just doin his thing, stoned or not, to me he’s just inspirational! N the “miming skits” were jokes!! it felt like bein in someones livingroom more than anything else..who ever gets upset bout things like that well, to me it dont seem like you know what the mans about. alot of his amazing soundscreations are built on a master mind & greeeen!
so what else do u expect? Oh well anyway…Bigup J Rocc aswell for droppin some fire! Had me n my girls dancin like a gang of funky fools! See yall at the next one! Peace! N also..sendin a shout out to Judaaaaaah a.k.a the hypemastaaaa dat creates disastaaaa!
J Rocc dropping Bizarre Inc’s Playing With Knives was my moment cuz it was completely unexpected…
You could tell by the end of the gig who were the real Madlib fans. From the place packed to the walls - to being able to walk easily to the front of stage towards the middle of his gig showed that alot of peeps were not feeling his set! I thought J Rocc killed it and saved the night for most! Madlib at first took me a while to appreciate what he was all about in the night. I should have expected that type of thing from the beat konducta. Something similar to what Doom has been doing live in the states?
After seeing these pics with the CDs on the decks I’m still trying to figure out what happened but a great experience nonetheless. Looking forward to the new Madvillain for sure.
I didn’t enjoy J.Rocc’s set that much because it felt like he wasn’t playing much that hadn’t been done a million times before. I think we’re spoiled with Deviation because we get so much new and innovative material that when you go to their nights you have such a high standard of expectations! I liked his energy though and without him the crowd would have surely burned out times 2 for Madlib. But to be fair to Madlib he was previewing new material which is never going to get the crowd jumping because nobody has heard it before and don’t know the grooves! I was very impressed with what I heard and can’t wait til it all comes out - a great electronic sounding musical progression from him, sounded like great club music. It’s hard to say whether he was being arrogant or whether his energy was just off, my guess is the latter having seen him before. Would have appreciated an apology about the no show the week before tho! Haha
